Pollution by Desktop – eWaste an Inconvenient Truth! (Part 1)
Most older computers contain more harmful components and even toxic substances compared to today’s models due to the evolution of technology. Newer standards that have bearing from the manufacturing stage till the disposal/recyclability of old ones are better than the older units that contain lots of lead and other hazardous chemicals contained within their components. Here are some pointers to get you down and green when it comes to your desktop or other gadgets and gizmos that may have lived out their useful lives:
a.) Branded desktops and other computer parts often have recycling programs that gets you a few bucks for your older computers as you buy newer models. Be sure to check recycling options when buying new computer hardware as well as certifications that may have an in fact on your health. Do not throw your old computer products out with the rest of your trash, it is not only irresponsible but polluting should they be dumped into landfills.
b.) Most gadgets and desktops use batteries that may need special handling when it comes to disposal. Mobile phones and other devices that use NiMh batteries can be a serious health hazard so send them in for recycling and recovery.
